A simple way of tracking email opens is by installing a Chrome extension.

The Chrome extensions work directly from the browser and will add a tracking pixel to the body of the emails you send.

Once your email has been opened, you will typically receive a notification.

Here are three Chrome extensions to try:

1. Mailsuite

The Mailsuite (formerly known as Mailtrack) Chrome extension will automatically track your emails in Gmail.

You can go to your Gmail “Sent” folder to see the read receipt status of all emails you’ve sent.

One checkmark means the email was sent successfully but not read. Two checkmarks mean it’s also been read by the recipient.

By hovering over the checkmark, you can also find out how many times the recipient opened your email and when.

With Mailsuite, you can track opens and clicks for unlimited email accounts.

However, Mailsuite doesn’t just track opens. With the “Advanced” version ($5.99/month), you can also send campaigns with it to up to 10,000 recipients at the same time.

The free version offers unlimited tracking and desktop notifications but also adds a Mailsuite signature to your emails.

2. Free Email Tracker by cloudHQ

Free Email Tracker also works with Gmail.

It’s a pretty proactive tool that sends you SMS, desktop, and email notifications when a recipient opens one of your emails, and even sends you reminders if after 48 hours a recipient hasn’t opened your email.

Free Email Tracker also offers the option to remove email tracking for personal emails.

Despite its name, the extension only offers a limited free version.

The free version adds a Free Email Signature to your emails and doesn’t offer unlimited link tracking, support, or Google Sheets with real-time reports. These features are available in the paid plan, costing $9.99/month.

3. Mailtag’s Email Tracker

With Email Tracker, you can track opens and clicks, send automated follow-ups, and more.

When recipients engage with your emails, you can get real-time desktop and email notifications.

Email Tracker’s analytics dashboard gives you insights into your open and click rate and how your automated follow-ups are performing.

Its only plan starts at $9.99/month (billed annually).

Pros and cons of using Chrome extensions for open tracking

Pros Cons
✅ Convenient Gmail integration: Some of the open tracking will be available in your Gmail account ❌ Limited scalability: Extensions are not ideal to send many emails with
✅ Potentially more affordable: A full email marketing platform is probably more expensive ❌ Privacy concerns: Extensions may get access to your emails
❌ Redundancy: You don’t need a Chrome extension if you use email email automation software like lemlist which can function as email tracking tools to monitor your open rates seamlessly
❌ Tracking inaccuracies: Since open rate tracking is no longer reliable, neither are Chrome extensions that track email opens.
